16 JULY 2013

The 2015 deadline to reach the eight anti-poverty Millennium Development Goals is fast approaching and despite challenging economic times and complex emergencies, through boosted innovation and global partnerships, the United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF) has made significant progress in reaching the most vulnerable populations of children and women. Launching it's annual report yesterday, the  UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake said that there has been much progress made in declining poverty rates, the near eradication of polio, increase immunisations, more girls attending school, improved access to water and nutrition and more children surviving beyond their fifth birthdays than ever. The report also recognises 2012 as an important year of 'firsts', highlighting India as being polio-free for one year and the first International Day of the Girl Child that calls for more political will and funding to prevent child marriages.

Among its successes, UNICEF highlights projects including the use of mobile phones to text births for registration in Nigeria and Uganda to ensure all children are not prevented from attending school and at lower risk of trafficking and other dangers. It highlights how innovative partnerships, such as that with the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), led to the creation of the Commission on Life-Saving Commodities for Women and Children. This Commission is responsible for improving access for women to life saving health interventions for children under five and women of childbearing age and are in support of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's Every Woman Every Child initiative.
