JEDDAH — The family of a young Pakistani man who is currently in intensive care in Riyadh with a collapsed lung has appealed for blood donations and financial help to meet his soaring medical costs.

Mohammad Mansoor Mohammad Zahoor, 23, was at a cricket ground in the capital on Friday morning when he suddenly felt acute chest pains, said his cousin Qamar Zaman, 23.

He was told to rest but the pain proved to be too much and he collapsed, around the time of the Friday prayers.

Mohammad was initially taken to a polyclinic before he was referred to Riyadh Care Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a collapsed right lung.

He remains in a critical condition although he is said to be stable for now.

Zaman said Mohammad’s father had died and, despite being in the process of transferring his sponsorship to another company, his cousin does not have valid medical insurance.

The family’s medical costs was SR15,000 as of Friday and could mount up to around SR100,000.

Although he is showing some signs of recovery, doctors said Mohammad may need an open chest operation if there is not further improvement, potentially increasing the final bill to an estimated SR150,000.

Riyadh Care tried to refer him to a government hospital so he could be treated free of charge but hospitals that were contacted said they were unable to accept him because he was not Saudi.

Zaman said the family cannot afford the medical costs.

He said: “Of course, they are really worried. Doctors said he is still in a critical condition and is still in anesthesia.

“We’ve been by his side for more than 10 hours.”

Zaman said doctors have paralyzed his right side to stop him from moving and drained a lot of blood from his chest. As a result, Mohammad also needs continuous blood transfusions.

Twenty-seven-year-old Waseem Yousaf, another cousin, said: “From our side, we are appealing for anyone who can help us to please come forward.

“If the Saudi government or charity organizations can also step in, that would really help us too.”
